China, Beijing: China started with the construction of an UHV DC transmission line.

China started with the construction of an ultra-high voltage (UHV) direct current (DC) transmission line that will link northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality, said the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC).

The transmission line will span 2,290 km and pass through five provincial-level regions across China.

The project has a rated voltage of ±800 kV, and its total investment is about $3.97 B (28.6 B yuan).

Lyu Xindong, deputy general manager of State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power Co., Ltd., said that the project will be bundled with 10.2 M kW of new energy, such as wind power and photovoltaics, of which new energy will account for over 50 %.

Once completed, it is estimated that the transmission line will  supply electricity of over 36 B kWh annually, reducing more than 16 M tonnes of CO2 emissions, said Qin Shuai, deputy general manager at the State Grid Chongqing Electric Power Company.
